Immediate dentures: a temporary measure to keep you smiling

Get quality immediate denture care in North York.

When you’re preparing for a tooth extraction, a lot of questions and concerns might cross your mind: How will I look afterwards? Will I be able to talk and eat? How will my recovery go? The good news is, many of these worries and fears can be alleviated with immediate dentures! Same-day or immediate dentures are designed to replace your extracted teeth immediately after surgery so you’re not left without teeth.

Before your teeth extraction surgery, your denturist and dentist will work together to create the right immediate dentures for you. Your same-day dentures will be used throughout your healing process as your mouth adjusts to the changes, swelling subsides, and tissues heal. This healing process can take up to six months, so it’s important to have comfortable immediate dentures that fit well during this time. Eventually, most patients replace their immediate dentures with permanent dentures.

As you would before any surgery, it’s important to plan ahead for your recovery and make sure you have all of the information and resources you need to give you peace of mind while you heal. With the right immediate dentures crafted by experienced denturists, your road to recovery can be a lot smoother.

Enjoy the most comfortable, secure partial dentures thanks to the precision of the latest digital denture technology.

Post Tooth Extraction Instructions and Care

  • 24 hours after extraction, remove and clean your immediate dentures with a denture cleaner.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to encourage healing.
  • Expect a certain amount of swelling and discomfort.
  • Take medication (if any is prescribed to you)
  • Eat a high calorie, soft diet.
  • It will take one to six weeks for your extraction sites to heal sufficiently to allow the placement of a temporary liner called a “tissue conditioner.”
  • Once your mouth tissues have completely healed (this can take everywhere from six months to one year) only then should a permanent reline be done. This service is not included in the cost of the denture.

Q&A

Are immediate dentures permanent?

This depends on your specific treatment plan and course. In most cases, a temporary immediate denture is eventually replaced by a permanent option in the six months to one year following teeth extractions.

How long do you keep immediate dentures in?

Immediate dentures should be kept in for the first 24-48 hours after tooth extractions for a couple of important reasons. They act as a type of bandage in the mouth and they can help slow or stop bleeding and also help prevent blood clots from coming apart. It’s also important to keep them in during this time because once they’re removed, your gums could swell and you’ll be unable to reinsert your immediate dentures.

Some patients are tempted to remove their immediate dentures in hopes it will alleviate pain or discomfort. But any discomfort in the mouth is a result of the extractions, not the denture, so this isn’t an effective option. Instead, try placing ice packs on your face and follow any other instructions your denturist and dentist share with you for pain management.

How much do same day dentures cost?

Every case is different and the cost of your same day dentures depends on your particular case. The cost also varies on whether a temporary transitional denture is made first and worn during the healing process. The best way to get a specific cost estimate is to book a free, no-obligation consultation with us.

Are immediate dentures a good idea?

Immediate dentures aren’t the right choice for every patient. They usually require more appointments to ensure a proper fit, and the cost could also be a limiting factor for some patients. But there are also several advantages to getting immediate dentures that make them an excellent choice for many people. The best way to find out if they’re right for you is to consult with your trusted denturist.

Can you eat with immediate dentures?

It might feel awkward or uncomfortable eating with immediate dentures at first, which is why it’s a good idea to stick to soft foods, cut into small bites at first. As you adapt to your immediate dentures, you can start experimenting with more challenging foods and incorporating more variety into your diet. Keep in mind, even once you’re used to your same-day dentures, it can still be tricky to eat particularly sticky, hard, or chewy foods.

Can I get my teeth pulled and dentures in on the same day?

About 95% of the time the answer is yes, as long as proper molds and jaw measurements can be taken, it is possible to have same day dentures. Keep in mind, this can also depend on your health history.
